Feature | Surround yourself with those who
Written by John Wilson
Every great storyteller I know seems to have had a moment at a workshop where inspiration just clicks. For me, it was at our annual Kentucky News Photographers Association workshop a decade ago. We had great and inspiring photographers in our state like Jon Smith, Scott Utterback and Drew Cook who pushed the young shooters from every station to participate. Our veteran photographers at WKYT, like Dean Handy and Ken Harvener, urged us to submit stories and to take one Saturday a year and dedicate ourselves to becoming a better photojournalist.
I was a snarky part time news and sports photographer who thought I had made it because I shot a few Kentucky Basketball games at Rupp Arena. What did these old dudes know about it anyway!?!
Then I saw this story and it changed my life…
I had never heard of Boyd Huppert. What is KARE11? Yeah – we might call them if we needed some Tubby Smith basketball video! I knew in that moment, this is what I had to do with my career. I have heard some variation of this story from almost every great storyteller that I have met in the years since. Those old guys in Kentucky knew one thing. Inspiration does not seek you out, you must put yourself in position to receive it.
To survive in this business you have to surround yourself with those of us who believe! The daily grind of television news will suck the life out of you. One needs the proper tools and the attitude to embrace small victories, search for moments, and find the heart of each story you are assigned. Again, put yourself in position to receive that inspiration. A great opportunity to do that is happening in Salt Lake City, June 2-4th. If you are struggling with your place in this career, thinking about throwing in the towel, or just need an old fashion Kentucky kick in the ass – join us!
