Scott Jensen & Greg Vandergrift: Teamwork is Key

Our tip for the week comes form Scott Jensen and Greg Vandergrift. Scott is still out there rockin it. He is currently at KING 5 in Seattle, WA. Scott is a 2 time POY and multi-Emmy award winner. There probably isn’t an award that Scott hasn’t won. He is one of the best photographers in the world.

Greg Vandergirft is also one of the great storytellers of KARE. After a decorated career at KARE, Greg is now a professor at the University of St. Thomas. At least that’s the last I find about him. Here they go……

CREATE A TEAM ENVIRONMENT

REPORTERS

1) CARRY THE TRIPOD

2) THINK LIKE A PHOTOGRAPHER. KNOW YOU ARE A VISUAL STORYTELLER.

3) BE AWARE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER MAY KNOW BETTER WHICH WAY THE STORY SHOULD GO

4) ALLOW YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER TIME TO GATHER THE PICTURES NECESSARY IN TELLING THE STORY.

5) YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER IS ABLE TO ASK QUESTIONS AND COLLECT INFORMATION JUST LIKE YOU DO.

6) ALLOW YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER TO MAKE SCRIPT SUGGESTIONS.

7) CONSTANTLY COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR PARTNER

8) DO ANYTHING THAT WILL HELP YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER GATHER THE BEST PICTURES AND SOUND

9) DON’T WRITE YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER INTO A CORNER.

10) COMMIT TO ACTIVE INTERVIEWS.

11) HAVE FUN TELLING GREAT STORIES!!!!

PHOTOGRAPHERS

1) GET OVER YOUR EGO.

2) REALIZE YOU ARE COLLECTING THE PUZZLE PIECES WITH WHICH THE REPORTER WILL WRITE THE STORY

3) KNOW YOUR REPORTER CAN CONTRIBUTE OR LEARN TO CONTRIBUTE VISUALLY TO THE STORY.

4) UNDERSTAND YOUR REPORTER NEEDS TO COLLECT INFORMATION. WORK TO FIT THE INFO INTO YOUR SEQUENCES.

5) KNOW THAT SOMETIMES YOU’LL HAVE TO WORK ALONE IN ORDER TO GET THE JOB DONE. PREPARE TO ASK QUESTIONS

6) ALLOW YOUR REPORTER TO SUGGEST SHOTS.

7) CONSTANTLY COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR PARTNER.

8) TELL YOUR REPORTER HOW HE/SHE CAN HELP YOU DO YOUR JOB BETTER.

9) DON’T SHOOT YOUR REPORTER INTO A CORNER.
