This is one of the most memorable stories i recall from my time at WTVF in Nashville. It was done by reporter Jeff Tang and photojournalist Nathan Sharkey. There is a lot of things that could be said about this story, but I’d like to note how effectively it leads viewers to connect with a non-human character. Pay attention to how Jeff and Nathan develop the dog as a being with relateable desires, even though the dog cannot explicitly do that herself. As you approach stories each day, don’t only look for meaningful themes in human characters. Look for themes in animals, nature, inanimate objects. Dig deeper for meaning and utilize unexpected elements to make your stories more meaningful and to give viewers something to connect to.
