TIP OF THE WEEK — It’s ok to laugh and cry and care…

The last few months have taught me that there is so much more to this life than deadlines and exclusives and non-stop breaking news. Colorado has never had a year quite like this, and I hope we never have to go through anything like this ever again… I have watched an entire neighborhood burn to the ground. I have listened to a mother as she begged me to put her daughter’s photograph on the news. Her daughter had spent the previous night inside a movie theater in Aurora. I have held vigil outside the home of a mother who was just days away from learning that her little daughter had been sliced apart shortly after being grabbed on her way to school… To suggest that I will leave this year unaffected would be dishonest… And so I offer this… To the young journalists out there, don’t ever find yourself hoping that something big will happen in your backyard… But when something does happen, don’t lose your sense of humanity… Don’t be the “get the story at all costs” kind of person… Yes, be aggressive and be thorough, but don’t be the stereotypical television reporter that this country is quickly learning to despise… Follow up with victims… Find the positive stories buried within all of the negative ones… And then go do a story that will make you and your audience laugh and smile and remember what they liked about television news in the first place…
